When Voteword launched some years ago, I appeared on talk shows and found that people were quite excited about it. In my naiveté, I expected the same result when I called on politicians and voting machine companies. In the “real world”, I discovered that both these groups have real reasons for not pursuing self-audited voting.
In the case of politicians, I learned that they will not pursue any initiatives on their own. No politician wants to be out ahead of her/constituents. Instead – and, perhaps, understandably – an elected official prefers to enact what their constituents are clamoring for. I also harbor the suspicion – and I certainly hope I’m wrong – that increased turnout can throw off the efforts of a candidate’s pollsters. This introduces uncertainty, which is anathema to a finely-tuned campaign.
As for voting machine companies, their resistance is quite pragmatic. As one voting machine representative told me, “Voteword is a good idea, but if state governments don’t ask us to incorporate features into our devices, we’re not about to do it on our own.”
But I’m curious: are there actually “good and defensible” reasons for not implementing this system? I’d love to know.
